Ideally babies should be in a head down (cephalic) presentation, especially for first time mums, at the time of birth.  Whilst a breech presentation is common in early pregnancy, most babies turn themselves around into head down position before the time of delivery.

Three in every 100 babies are breech at the end of pregnancy. This happens more frequently in first time mums. We know that after 36 weeks of pregnancy, only 6 percent of breech babies will then turn into the head-down position on their own.

If your baby is found to be breech any time after 34 weeks, you have a safe window between 34-36 weeks to try natural ways to turn your baby., including positions and moxibustion.

If your baby is still breech at 36 weeks, you will then be referred to your maternity unit to discuss options with an Obstetrician. There are 3 main options if your baby is breech from 36 weeks onwards:

1. Do nothing and plan for a breech vaginal birth.

2. Attempt to turn the baby with an external cephalic version (ECV).

3. Plan a caesarean section from 39 weeks.

Moxibustion for Breech Presentation - £110

Moxibustion is a gentle, heat-based therapy rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It involves burning a small herb stick (moxa, made from dried mugwort) near specific acupuncture points on the feet. The warmth stimulates these points, increasing blood flow and relaxation in the uterus — which can encourage baby’s movement and turning.

It’s completely safe when performed correctly, and can be a calming, mindful moment for both you and your baby.

How effective is it?

Research suggests that Moxibustion can be effective in helping turn breech babies, with success rates of around 60–70%, compared to External Cephalic Version (ECV), which has a success rate of approximately 40–60% depending on individual circumstances.

Many parents choose to try Moxibustion first, as it offers a natural, comfortable, and non-invasive alternative that can be done in the comfort of your own home.
